James Toback Isn't Happy About Scorsese and DiCaprio's 'Gambler' Remake

If Martin Scorsese, among the finest company directors ever, was thinking about remaking a movie that you simply authored (and something which was loosely according to your existence), you'd need to be pretty pleased, right? Well, not if you're James Toback. Toback may be the guy behind the 1974 film 'The Gambler,' starring James Caan (who had been nominated for his role as Axel Freed) and Paul Sorvino. Why is Toback upset that Scorsese, together with Leonardo DiCaprio, is going to be remaking his classic? Well, simply because they never gave poor James a manages it had been done. Toback lately required to Deadline to voice his complaints concerning the whole situation. The letter he authored is fairly fascinating, and when you're a fan from the film, it's worth reading through in the whole. However, the stuff regarding his displeasure using the remake is below. It could appear odd that my primary reaction to this news from the purported remake could be something south of "flattered and honored," but you that my primary feeling was among disbelief which i was learning of those plans simultaneously as well as in exactly the same fashion as the regular devoted visitors of the column. It struck me as particularly odd since I've been a buddy and limitless admirer of Leonardo [DiCaprio]'s since our initial encounter in 1994 whenever we were, actually, ready to shut an offer on his playing charge in 'Harvard Man' ... Equally odd wasn't hearing anything from Irwin Winkler who, I had been soon to understand, will be producer about this forecasted latest version because he was about the original. [via Deadline]

George Clooney Drops Out of Steven Soderbergh's 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.'

George Clooney and director Steven Soderbergh have teamed together on umpteen films, including the 'Ocean's Eleven' series, 'Out of Sight' and 'Solaris,' but you won't see Clooney in Soderbergh's next film. Deadline is reporting that Clooney has dropped out of Soderbergh's adaptation of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,' but no one seems to know why. Clooney is also absent from Soderbergh's latest, the killer virus thriller 'Contagion,' which opens September 9. (Don't worry, Matt Damon is on hand to keep some Soderberghian continuity among the all-star cast.) 'U.N.C.L.E.'s screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, meanwhile, told CinemaBlend, "The script is done and [they'll] start casting soon," with an eye towards a spring start date. Instead of basing the script on any specific TV episodes, Burns said that the movie will be inspired by real Cold War events. "All those shows are called, like, 'The Terbuf Affair' or whatever. Our 'affair' comes from something that was actually going on in the world at the time." The original 1960s series starred Robert Vaughn and David McCallum (now playing 'Ducky' on 'NCIS') as an American and a Russian spy who team up to fight the evil THRUSH organization. Clooney would presumeably have taken the Napoleon Solo role played by Vaughn. Clooney will next be seen in the heavily-buzzed-about 'The Ides of March' and 'The Descendants,' and recently wrapped Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity.' 'Ghostbusters 3': Dan Aykroyd Spills Details on Plot

Sonia Recchia/Getty Images It looks like the Ghostbusters will be back in action. After months of speculation, Dan Aykroyd, one of the original stars, hinted Thursday on The Dennis Miller Show that the film could start shooting in the spring. He added that Bill Murray has not yet committed to the project, but he and the creatives behind the film are hoping Murray signs on to reprise his role from the first two films. "Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray," he said, as reported by ComingSoon.net. "That is our hope. We have an excellent script." STORY: Dan Aykroyd: 'Ghostbusters' Reboot Is 'Comic Role of a Lifetime' In March, Ivan Reitman expressed that same sentiment to The Hollywood Reporter, saying: "There's a very good script that the other cast members have read and liked. We're just waiting for Bill Murray to read it." But on Thursday, Aykroyd argued that the movie could go forward without Murray should he decide not to return. "What we have to remember is that Ghostbusters is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]," he said. "The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of Ghostbusters 3 is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood." STORY: Ivan Reitman Talks 'Ghostbusters III,' 'Baywatch' Movie and 'Private Parts' Sequel The story line, according to Aykroyd, will center around the original Ghostbusters' inability to effectively bust ghosts anymore, so they set out to find new recruits. "My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the Cadillac," he says, "He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs. ... Egon [Ramis' character] is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the promise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation." It's unclear whether the fourth Ghostbuster, Ernie Hudson, would be part of the cast. In April, the actor said he had not been approached by anyone in the project. "I haven't seen anybody with any money, but I hear it's happening, and I've been reading all the press stuff, and the fans have been telling me that it's on," he told TMZ. Meanwhile, Aykroyd did say Thursday that there has been no casting decisions made, but one of his recommendations would be Criminal Minds actor Matthew Gray Gubler. "There's going to be a casting," he added.":We're going to see everyone that wants to do it. We're going to need ... three guys and a young woman." Autopsy Report On 'Glee 3D Concert Movie'

I suspectall non-Gleeks now can relax since Fox will never make another Glee 3D unless a few execs at 20th and 20th TV undergo lobotomies. The concert film opened in only 6th place Friday with $2.7M, then Saturday plunged -39% for just $1.6M which took the pic out of the Top 10 completely. Its $5.5M weekend from 2,040 theaters would not just be humiliating but downright disastrous if it hadn't been made for such a low budget -- around $9.5M to $9.7M, according to Ryan Murphy who emailed me: "That's compared to the Bieber film which was around $14 million I believe. So the risk [was] very very low. No matter what it will be a money maker for Fox. I am proud of it." Murphy, who produced but did not direct, was as befuddled as Fox TV and film execs why the pic didn't do better, especially because it was given an 'A+' CinemaScore from audiences under age 25. it was given an 'A+' CinemaScore from audiences under age 25. "The CinemaScores were excellent. They don't sync up with the results," one Fox TV exec emailed me. Fox thought the film would at least reach double-digits, crack the Top 5 for the weekend, and perform respectably like the other concert movies. But the studio wasn't really sure what to make of the soft tracking despite fan favorite castmembers like Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, Chord Overstreet, and The Warblers. Murphy said that, by design, the movie wasn't just a big screen version of the TV show: instead it's about 3 young people who say that Glee helped them live better lives and overcome struggles with their personal stories cut against 20 positive message songs. When moviegoers didn't materialize Friday, the filmmakers still thought kids would come out Saturday and Sunday. But these concert films are frontloaded and it's all downhill from opening day. Immediately Fox TV execs turned against Fox film execs. "I think it was a shitty campaign that did not effectively communicate what the movie was or that the people who had seen it reviewed it positively," one suit told me. "I think the feature company took a very laid-back approach, feeling their only job was to alert the core fans and that's not enough to fill seats." I say these concert films are very unpredictable: remember, the Jonas brothers concert movie didn't do well (though not as bad as this) and they were really big at the time. But kids can watch the real Glee for free on Fox and faux Glee Project on Oxygen so why spend their milk money on a movie ticket. No one believes that limited-run 2-week-onlynonsense anymore. And maybe Glee is just over-exposed right now and not as cool as it was initially. Not even a Fox Television integration with the So You Think You Can Dance finale helped attendance. So maybe Sue Sylvester's email sent to the press as a publicity stunt was really prescient: "For two years, weve been mercilessly bombarded with the pubescent nonsense of carnival sideshow freaks calling themselves 'The Glee Club'. And now, theyre trying to shove a 3D concert movie down our throats. Its time to make a stand against these pimply-faced, hormone-ridden twits by joining the 'STOP BELIEVING' campaign. Say 'NO' to their insignificant cinematic experiment. I dont know about you, but I cant stand looking at their little satanic faces in 2D, much less 3D."
